REVIVE INGREDIENTS

Activ8 Revive is the perfect supplement to take when you need to recharge. The food supplement contains vitamins, plant extracts and melatonin. But what effects do these Revive ingredients have? How do they work? Let’s have a closer look at the scientific proof behind the ingredients.

OPTIMAL SLEEP

Getting enough sleep is essential for the optimal functioning of our bodies. It ensures a daily recovery of body cells. Too little sleep can lead to very different health problems such as concentration problems, fatigue, restless legs and even breathing problems.

Healthy sleep consists of 2 types: the NON-REM (REM is rapid eye movement) phase and the REM phase. The NON-REM phase is 75% of the sleep, the REM phase 25%. The NON-REM and REM phases alternate. In the REM phase, there is increased brain activity, in this phase also dreams take place.

Sleep is very important for processing memories, as well as learning new tasks. The NON-REM phase is especially important for recording facts in the memory, the REM phase is more for processing emotions and skills.1

The natural active Activ8 Revive ingredients that have proven effects to improve sleep are: L-Tryptophan, Valerian, Melatonin, Lemon Balm (Mellissa Officinalis), Passionflower

L-TRYPTOPHAN

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that you must consume through food. Tryptophan plays an important role in brain function. It is a precursor (building block) of the neurotransmitter serotonin, but also the hormone melatonin. Vitamin B6 is essential for these processes, these mechanisms do not work well when there’s a shortage.

Serotonin plays an important role in controlling emotions, as well as in the processing of sleep and pain. Most of the converting from tryptophan into serotonin takes place in the gut. The gut bacteria play a major role. Certain lactobacillus and bifidobacteria can transform tryptophan directly into serotonin.2

VALERIAN

Valerian is a herb with medicinal properties. There are 250 known species. The 3 main varieties intended to improve sleep are Valeriana Officinalis, Valeriana Walichii and Valeriana Edulis. The use of Valerian root for its positive effects on sleep has been practised since the 18th century. It has not yet been fully elucidated which active ingredient in valerian is responsible for this effect. One possible theory is that the lignan hydroxypinoresinol is responsible for this. In addition, there is hesperidin in Valerian extract, which also has sleep-stimulating properties. It is probably mainly the synergy between the active substances that determines the effect. These substances may affect neurotransmitters. More research is needed to understand the mechanism.3

MELATONIN

Melatonin is a hormone-like substance mainly produced by the pineal gland. This gland responds to light and produces melatonin. Melatonin levels are low during the day and high at night. There is ample evidence that melatonin plays an important role in both falling asleep and sleep quality.

Melatonin is made from tryptophan. Melatonin is quickly broken down in the body by the handle and in the intestines. The bioavailability of melatonin in supplement form is therefore not very high and also depends on the individual. There are big differences from person to person. In women, bioavailability is twice as high as in men, the absorption is improved by caffeine.

Sleep-inducing effects have been proven in several studies at doses >1 mg, but in adults doses of 0.1-0.3 mg were already effective.4

PASSIONFLOWER

Passionflower is a medicinal plant from the tropical regions of America. Research shows passionflower extract has a positive effect, especially on NON-REM sleep. The mechanism is not fully elucidated. It is similar in effect to valerian, which also affects certain neurotransmitters.5

MELLISSA

Especially the combination of Lemon Balm (or Melissa extract) with Valerian gave a significant improvement in sleep quality. A dose of 480 mg valerian and 240 mg lemon balm was used.6
